Washington's Intercity Bus Network & Connecting Communities

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has been operating the Travel Washington Intercity Bus Program since 2007. The goal of the Travel Washington Program is to connect rural communities to major transportation hubs and urban centers, filling gaps in the public transportation network, and making travel more accessible, reliable, and convenient. WSDOT released its last plan update for the Travel Washington Intercity Bus Program in 2019. One of the recommendations that came out of that plan update was the potential for route expansion alternatives. Since the last plan update, the intercity bus network has been greatly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The success of the Travel Washington Intercity Bus Program routes is reliant on the unsubsidized, meaningful connections that make up the larger intercity bus network around Washington state and across the nation. Many of these services have seen reduced frequency or been lost entirely since the pandemic.
